John 11 begins against the darkening hostility of John 10. Jesus had been teaching in the temple during the Feast of Dedication when the Jewish leaders surrounded Him and demanded that He identify Himself plainly. After He declared, “I and the Father are one,” they picked up stones to kill Him (John 10:30–31). When they later attempted to arrest Him, Jesus escaped and withdrew across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing (vv. 39–40).
While Jesus was there, a crisis developed in Bethany. This was not the Bethany beyond the Jordan, but the village of Mary and Martha, less than two miles from Jerusalem (John 11:18). Returning there would bring Jesus dangerously close to the men who had just attempted to seize and stone Him.
The suffering family was particularly dear to Christ. Martha had welcomed Jesus into her home, Mary had sat at His feet to hear His teaching, and Lazarus was their brother. John identifies Mary as the woman who would anoint the Lord with ointment and wipe His feet with her hair (John 11:2; 12:1–3). This was not a request from strangers. It came from a household that knew Christ and had experienced His friendship.
When Lazarus became seriously ill, the sisters sent a messenger across the Jordan. Their message contained no command and proposed no remedy. They simply stated the need and appealed to Christ’s affection: “Lord, he whom you love is ill” (John 11:3). That is a good pattern for prayer. Their hope rested not in the strength of their request, but in the love and wisdom of the One to whom they appealed. They told Him what grieved them and left the answer in His hands.
John then tells us what Jesus knew from the beginning: “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (v. 4). Lazarus would truly die, but death would not be the final end or governing purpose of his illness. The sickness, the waiting, and even the tomb would become instruments through which the glory of Christ would be revealed.
John reinforces the love behind the approaching trial: “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus” (v. 5).
What follows, therefore, is startling: “So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was” (v. 6).
The word translated “so” is the Greek conjunction oun (οὖν), an inferential particle that can also be rendered “therefore” or “so then.” It draws a conclusion from what precedes it. John does not say, “Although Jesus loved them, He remained where He was.” He says that Jesus loved them, therefore He remained for two more days. Young’s Literal Translation preserves the force: “When, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days.” Jesus did not delay despite His love. His delay was one of the ways His love was accomplishing its purpose.
That is not the sentence we would have written. We would have written: Jesus loved them, so when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He left for Bethany that hour. When my wife was in the hospital with a brain bleed, I left the building only twice in three weeks. Both times, I drove home on edge, waiting for the phone to ring. That is what love ordinarily does. Love closes the distance. Here, however, love opened the distance on purpose for two days.
There is another small detail in verse 6. John says that Jesus “then indeed” remained. The word men (μέν), translated “indeed,” often creates an expectation that another part of the thought will follow. Verse 7 supplies that: “Then after this he said to the disciples, ‘Let us go to Judea again.’” John does not use the ordinary balancing de construction, so we should not press the grammar too far. Nevertheless, the narrative joins the staying and the going as parts of one deliberate course of action. This was not hesitation followed by a change of mind. Christ had one plan, executed in stages.
Divine love does not always take the form we expect. We assume that if Christ loves us, He will immediately remove our pain, answer our prayer, heal our sickness, or resolve our crisis. Mary and Martha likely expected Jesus to come quickly. Instead, Lazarus grew worse and died. Jesus did not arrive in Bethany until Lazarus had been in the tomb four days.
From the family’s limited perspective, it may have appeared that Christ had failed to act. Yet Jesus understood the purpose of the delay from the beginning: “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (v. 4).
The Greek phrase is ouk estin pros thanaton (οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον), “is not unto death.” The preposition pros with the accusative can indicate direction or destination. Jesus was not offering a mistaken medical prognosis, as though Lazarus would never die. He was identifying the terminus of the illness. It would pass through death as a road may pass through a town without ending there. Death was real, but it was not the destination. The rest of the verse names the true end: “for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
Christ allowed Lazarus to die so that He might display His glory by calling him out of the tomb. The illness was a means, and even the death was a means. The appointed end was the revelation of Christ as the resurrection and the life.
Jesus also told His disciples, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe” (vv. 14–15). The verb translated “I am glad” is chairō (χαίρω), and it means exactly that: to rejoice or be glad. Christ did not rejoice in the suffering of Lazarus or the grief of his sisters. He rejoiced in the saving purpose that would be accomplished through His absence: “so that you may believe.” Had He prevented Lazarus from dying, the disciples would have witnessed another healing. By delaying, He revealed something greater: He is not merely able to preserve life; He has authority over death itself.
Taken by themselves, the delay and Christ’s gladness could sound like indifference. John prevents that reading by deliberately accumulating the language of affection. The sisters say, “he whom you love is ill.” John tells us, “Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” Jesus calls him “our friend Lazarus” (v. 11).
This does not mean that every illness will be healed in this life or that every painful circumstance will resolve as we desire. Lazarus was raised, but he eventually died again. The sign points beyond itself to Christ, who declares, “I am the resurrection and the life” (v. 25). The Christian’s hope is not that every temporal sorrow will be reversed immediately. Our hope is that union with Christ guarantees resurrection and eternal life, so that not even death can defeat God’s saving purpose.
The Safest Place Is in the Light
The delay was not the only surprising feature of the passage. When Jesus finally announced that they would return to Judea, His disciples objected: “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” (v. 8).
Their concern was understandable. Judea was dangerous. But Jesus answered:
Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. (John 11:9–10).
True safety is not found in avoiding every danger. It is found in walking according to the will of God. Jesus knew that returning to Judea would place Him nearer to the cross, yet He also knew that no enemy could shorten the “day” appointed to Him by His Father. Until His hour came, He would walk faithfully in the work He had been given.
The same principle applies to Christ’s people. Obedience may bring hardship, rejection, persecution, or loss. Scripture does not promise us a life of earthly ease. It promises something better: God will preserve His people through faith and bring them safely into their eternal inheritance. The most dangerous path is not the one that includes suffering. It is the path of darkness and disobedience.
His Delays Are Not His Absence
John 11 teaches us not to interpret Christ’s love by the immediate appearance of our circumstances. Mary and Martha knew that Jesus loved them, but for several days everything they saw seemed to contradict that truth. The messenger returned without Jesus. Lazarus weakened. Their prayers appeared unanswered. Their brother died.
Sit in that house for those days. Watch a brother become weaker. Watch two sisters send for the only man who can stop it. Then watch the hours pass, the messenger return without Jesus, Lazarus’s breathing change, and finally his body become still. Mary and Martha had every visible reason to wonder whether Christ cared. What they could see was real, but it was not sufficient to interpret what Christ was doing. The reason for the delay stood beyond the Jordan, and that reason was love.
Yet Christ had never ceased loving them, and He had never lost control of the situation. His purpose was wiser, deeper, and more glorious than they could see.
The same is true in the providence of God. There will be times when we pray and heaven seems silent. We may face sickness, financial distress, broken relationships, persecution, or bereavement. The modern objection is familiar: If God is there, why does He not do something? Why the cancer, the accident, or the silence? There is real grief in those questions, and we should never answer them flippantly. As an argument against God, however, they often move from “I cannot see a good purpose” to “there can be no good purpose.” That conclusion reaches far beyond the evidence available to us.
We should not pretend that suffering is painless, nor should we claim to know the particular purpose behind every trial. John 11 does not make us interpreters of God’s secret providence. It teaches us that our inability to see His purpose is not evidence that He has none. We do not know everything God is doing, but we do know His character and promises.
“For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Paul does not restrict that promise to pleasant circumstances. A few verses later he names tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword. He then includes both death and life among the created things that cannot separate believers from “the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35–39). God does not promise that His people will avoid these things. He promises that none of them can overturn His saving purpose.
Christ’s delay at Bethany was not a denial of His love. It was love refusing to give only the smaller gift. Mary and Martha wanted their brother kept from death. They received their brother walking out of a tomb and a revelation of the Christ who says, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).
That particular temporal reversal belonged to Lazarus as a sign of Christ’s glory. We are not promised that every grave will open before the last day or that every present sorrow will end as we desire. We are promised something greater and permanent: everyone united to Christ will be raised in glory, and no providence between now and then can separate us from His love.
We cannot always see what God is doing behind His apparent delays, but we can trust the One who gave His Son for us. The cross proves that His love is not measured by present comfort, and the resurrection proves that suffering and death will not have the final word.
When Christ delays, He has not forgotten His people. Walk in His light, cling to His promises, and remember that every providence is governed by the wisdom of the One who is Himself the resurrection and the life.
